The Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Harleston Parker Medal for its renovation design by Utile, Inc. The award, given out at the annual Boston Society for Architecture awards gala, recognizes the most beautiful piece of architecture built in the metropolitan Boston area in the past decade. The Roxbury Branch was chosen by a jury of architects and public servants for its transformation of a brutalist building and its community-driven programming. The branch’s design involves the community, with initiatives like the Nutrition Lab. The BSA also presented the Harleston Parker People’s Choice Award to the Harvard University District Energy Facility, designed by Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects. Overall, the gala celebrated exceptional design in the built environment as a way to empower communities and promote sustainability and equity in Boston. The Roxbury Branch’s win marks Utile, Inc.’s first time receiving the Harleston Parker Medal.
