In a surprising turn of events, an arrest has been made in a double homicide case that had gone cold for 46 years. Timothy Joley, 71, has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the 1978 deaths of Theresa Marcoux, 18, and Mark Harnish, 20, in western Massachusetts.
The victims were last seen leaving a friend’s party in the early hours of November 17, 1978. Their bodies were later found over a guardrail near Harnish’s green Dodge pickup truck, where they had been shot dead in the passenger compartment before being moved.
The breakthrough in the case came when a fingerprint found on the truck, which did not belong to the victims, was linked to Joley. Investigators discovered that Joley had lived in Springfield, Massachusetts, at the time of the murders and was a licensed gun owner who had purchased a Colt handgun around the time of the killings.
Joley was arrested at his home in Clearwater, Florida, on October 30 and is currently being held without bond. He is expected to be extradited to Massachusetts to face trial.
Authorities have not disclosed any motive or connection between the suspect and the victims. The district attorney praised the families of Marcoux and Harnish for their patience and faith over the years, acknowledging the long road ahead to achieve justice in the case.
