Earthquake hits Magee, MS the same day as tornadoes in the state, according to USGS

Small, shallow volcanic earthquakes have been detected beneath Mount Spurr in Alaska, indicating a possible eruption. In Mississippi, a 3.0 magnitude earthquake hit near Magee, a town already impacted by multiple tornadoes. The earthquake caused no damage and was considered minor. This follows a 2.5 magnitude earthquake near the Ross Barnett Reservoir on Thanksgiving Day. The Mississippi Valley, known for seismic activity, has experienced earthquakes in the past, with Oklahoma seeing a surge in earthquakes since 2014. Magee, with a population of 3,988, is located about 42 miles Southeast of Jackson. The recent earthquake was the only seismic activity recorded in Mississippi in the last three weeks. Nearby Taylorsville experienced tornado damage, with reports of multiple homes and a high school being damaged. Debris from the tornadoes was thrown thousands of feet into the atmosphere. The Magee earthquake was the site of recent white supremacist recruiting efforts. The Thanksgiving earthquake near the Ross Barnett Reservoir had no reported damage. Earthquakes in the region are not uncommon, with the New Madrid seismic zone historically being the most seismically active area east of the Rocky Mountains until Oklahoma surpassed it in earthquake rates in 2014.
