Fundraiser raises $100K for Connecticut man believed to have been held captive for 20 years

A fundraiser organized for a 32-year-old man who was allegedly held captive by his stepmother for twenty years has raised over $100,000 and received numerous tributes. The man was discovered after setting fire to a home in Waterbury, Connecticut in February, having endured physical and mental abuse, while lacking basic needs like medical care and education. The fundraiser, organized by Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury, aims to support the man’s physical and emotional recovery with medical care, therapy, housing, and legal fees.

The stepmother, 56-year-old Kimberly Sullivan, faces several charges, including assault and kidnapping, but is currently out on bond. The fundraiser has received almost 2,000 donations towards its $120,000 goal, with donations coming in from across the country. Many donors have left messages of encouragement and support for the man, urging him to take care of himself and find peace after such a traumatic experience.

One donor wrote, “You are a good person. Keep your chin up, go to school, ride a horse, watch the sunset, and be good to yourself.” Another donor praised the man’s perseverance in the face of extreme cruelty, calling it “extraordinary and profoundly awe-inspiring.” The overwhelming support and generosity from donors have given hope to the man as he begins the journey to rebuild his life after years of suffering.
