Massachusetts State Police have fired lead investigator Michael Proctor, who had been looking into suspected cop killer Karen Read. Read was accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, in a hit-and-run incident. Proctor’s termination came after text messages he sent about the case were revealed during trial, damaging his credibility. Proctor’s family believes he was unfairly targeted and that the messages were taken out of context.
Proctor, a 12-year veteran with an otherwise unblemished record, was found to have improperly shared sensitive information and made derogatory comments about Read. Despite his termination, Proctor’s family stands by him, insisting that the messages do not reflect his competence as a detective.
Read’s murder trial ended in a mistrial, with prosecutors planning to bring her back to court for a new trial. Read has insinuated that O’Keefe may have been killed by fellow officers as part of a conspiracy to frame her for the crime. O’Keefe’s family has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Read.
Proctor’s family maintains his belief in the justice system and expresses gratitude for the support he has received. Read’s upcoming trial will be led by a special assistant prosecutor with experience representing notorious mobster James “Whitey” Bulger. Despite the challenges faced by both sides, the quest for justice in this high-profile case continues.
