67,000 white South Africans show interest in Trump’s refugee policy

The United States Embassy in South Africa has received a list of nearly 70,000 people interested in refugee status in the U.S. under President Donald Trump’s plan to relocate members of a white minority group who he claims are victims of racial discrimination by their Black-led government. The list, provided by the South African Chamber of Commerce in the U.S., is not considered official applications. Trump’s executive order mentioned Afrikaners, a white minority group in South Africa, and directed officials to prioritize humanitarian relief and resettlement for them in the U.S. The South African government has denied the allegations of racial discrimination and land expropriation made by Trump. The executive order also criticized South Africa’s foreign policy regarding Israel and the U.S. The U.S. Embassy in South Africa confirmed receipt of the list but did not provide further details. The president of the Chamber of Commerce in the U.S. stated that they have been overwhelmed with requests for information and have asked for a channel for South Africans to register for refugee status. Only U.S. authorities can officially process resettlement applications.
