Karen Read’s retrial date for the murder of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, is uncertain as her defense attorneys seek a trial delay. The defense is waiting for a decision from the federal appeals court on dropping two of Read’s charges – second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Despite earlier petitions being denied, her lawyers are hopeful that the appeals court will rule in their favor.
The upcoming trial, which is Read’s second after the first ended in a hung jury last July, was scheduled to begin on April 1. However, the defense has requested a postponement to April 28 to await the appeals court’s decision. This request has been agreed upon by the prosecution, but they reserve the right to oppose any further delays. Both sides discussed the timeline for the retrial, with the state’s case expected to take around three-and-a-half weeks, while the defense estimates a week-and-a-half to two weeks for their case. The trial centers on Read’s alleged ramming of O’Keefe with her SUV and the defense’s conspiracy theory that she was framed in a law enforcement plot.
