Ballot initiative to combat rising energy costs in Massachusetts: ‘Protecting our freedom’

Concerned residents in Massachusetts have banded together to form Citizens Against Eversource, a group with over 31,000 members aiming to improve transparency and consumer protection in the energy sector. Founded by New Bedford resident Elijah DeSousa, the group seeks to address the soaring utility bills experienced by residents over the winter due to the state’s decarbonization agenda and harsh weather conditions.

One of the key initiatives proposed by the group is a statewide ballot initiative that includes measures such as a rate lock to prevent cost increases above a set threshold and increased transparency on energy bills. Residents feel disillusioned with state officials and believe that everyone has the right to affordable energy without being exploited.

The Department of Public Utilities approved rate hikes of over 30% for gas companies like Eversource and National Grid last fall, leading to skyrocketing bills for consumers. Advocates aim to conduct an audit of the DPU and Mass Save program to uncover mismanagement and improve accountability. The initiative, which has already collected over 20,000 signatures, requires support from lawmakers and the attorney general to proceed. Efforts by the Healey administration to reduce costs have been met with skepticism by residents who feel that transparency and fair pricing are essential in the energy sector.
