Veteran pitcher Adam Ottavino has been released by the Boston Red Sox after failing to make the team as a non-roster invitee. Ottavino, who spent the last three years with the New York Mets, exercised an opt-out provision in his contract to seek opportunities elsewhere in Major League Baseball. Despite his contributions to the Red Sox bullpen in 2021, Ottavino struggled in spring training this year, allowing six earned runs in five innings. Along with Ottavino, left-hander Matt Moore was also reportedly informed he won’t be on the Opening Day roster but has chosen to stay with the organization and start the season at Triple-A Worcester. Ottavino’s release comes as a surprise to some, given his past success with the team, but the Red Sox appear to be moving in a different direction for the upcoming season. It remains to be seen where Ottavino, a former Northeastern University standout, will land next in his MLB career.
