Reasoning in A.I. Chatbots like ChatGPT and DeepSeek

OpenAI recently introduced a new version of ChatGPT that is capable of reasoning through tasks related to math, science, and computer programming. This new technology allows the chatbot to spend time thinking through complex problems before providing an answer, outperforming other leading systems in the industry.

While other companies like Google and China’s DeepSeek also offer similar technologies, questions remain about the ability of A.I. systems to reason like humans. This new level of reasoning involves the chatbot working through a problem for several seconds or minutes before settling on an answer, refining its approach or trying different methods to find a solution.

Reasoning systems are more advanced than earlier chatbots as they can self-reflect without being prompted and operate in more complex ways. Companies believe that building reasoning systems is crucial for improving chatbot performance as traditional methods relying on internet data have reached their limits.

To create reasoning systems, companies like OpenAI use reinforcement learning, a training method that allows A.I. systems to learn through trial and error. Although reinforcement learning works well in areas such as math and science, it is not as effective in creative fields where distinguishing good behavior is challenging.

While these reasoning systems may not match human intelligence yet and can still make mistakes, they represent a significant advancement in A.I. technology. A.I. experts are divided on whether these systems are the path to achieving human-like intelligence, as researchers continue to explore the potential and limitations of these new methods.
