The Dogsled Race That Thwarted Usha Vance’s Greenland Adventure

Vice President JD Vance announced that he would be visiting Greenland with his wife, despite objections from Danish and Greenlandic officials. The original trip, with the intention of making Greenland the 51st U.S. state, was altered to only include a visit to the U.S. Space Force Base at Pituffik. The trip, which began with an invitation for the second lady to attend a dogsled race, was met with protests and criticisms from locals.

President Donald Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland stems from the economic potential of the territory, including its untapped rare earth minerals and its strategic location in the Arctic. The U.S. has maintained a missile defense base in Greenland since World War II, and Trump has expressed a desire to strengthen U.S. control over the region.

Despite claims from Danish and Greenlandic officials that the U.S. was pressuring Greenland, American companies like Greenmet are working to facilitate business opportunities in the territory. However, locals are wary of the motivations behind the U.S. delegation’s visit, especially in light of Trump’s past statements about acquiring Greenland by force if necessary.

The revised itinerary for the U.S. delegation only includes a brief visit to the Pituffik base, where they will receive a briefing on Arctic security issues. The exclusion of the dogsled race and other attractions has been met with disappointment from both locals and officials, highlighting the complex relationship between the U.S. and Greenland.
