Union files lawsuit against Trump administration over national security justification

The National Treasury Employees Union, representing 150,000 U.S. government employees, filed a lawsuit to block President Trump’s executive order that would strip federal workers of their ability to collectively bargain with government agencies. The executive order exempted several agencies from collective bargaining obligations, citing national security concerns as the reason for the move. The union argues that this violates federal workers’ labor rights and the U.S. Constitution, and that the order was motivated by a desire to make federal employees easier to fire and political animus against unions that oppose the Trump administration. In response to the order, eight federal agencies also filed a lawsuit against local union affiliates to invalidate existing union contracts covering thousands of workers. The NTEU’s lawsuit seeks to block Trump’s order and prevent federal agencies from complying with it. The union contends that the order was not based on genuine national security concerns, but rather on the administration’s policy goals and hostility towards federal sector unions. The outcome of the lawsuit will determine whether federal employees will retain their ability to collectively bargain and protect their labor rights.
