Former Massachusetts State Police trooper Calvin Butner has agreed to plead guilty to federal charges related to a bribery scandal involving commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). The scandal involved awarding CDLs to applicants who failed or did not properly complete the test, with Butner and others accused of giving preferential treatment to at least 17 applicants between May 2019 and January 2023. Butner will plead guilty to nine charges, including conspiracy to falsify records, falsifying records, aiding and abetting, and making false statements. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
