Massachusetts State Police Trooper to Admit Guilt in CDL Bribery Case – NBC Boston

Former Massachusetts State Police trooper Calvin Butner has agreed to plead guilty to federal charges related to a bribery scandal involving commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). The scandal involved awarding CDLs to applicants who failed or did not properly complete the test, with Butner and others accused of giving preferential treatment to at least 17 applicants between May 2019 and January 2023. Butner will plead guilty to nine charges, including conspiracy to falsify records, falsifying records, aiding and abetting, and making false statements. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The scandal is part of a larger conspiracy involving six people, including four current or former state troopers, who allegedly conspired to allow drivers who did not pass the CDL test to obtain licenses in exchange for goods or services. This case highlights the issue of trooper misconduct, with Butner and others facing serious consequences for their actions.

CDLs are required to operate commercial vehicles, and the testing process is meant to ensure that drivers have the necessary knowledge and skills. The scandal raises concerns about public safety and the integrity of the testing system. This case is an example of the importance of maintaining strict standards and holding those responsible for corruption and bribery accountable.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts has been pursuing charges against individuals involved in the conspiracy, with Eric Mathison, one of two civilians charged in the case, already pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion. The investigation into the bribery scandal continues, with consequences for those involved in the corruption.
