Former Celtics fan favorite sits on the bench during Washington Wizards’ return to Boston

Marcus Smart made his return to TD Garden on Sunday night as a member of the Washington Wizards, receiving a warm welcome from the crowd. Despite being healthy and playing well for Washington, Smart did not suit up for the game against his former team, the Boston Celtics. The Wizards are currently focused on securing a higher draft position and have been sitting key players to achieve this goal.

Smart has been a valuable addition to the Wizards, averaging 9.3 points and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 39.2 percent from 3-point range. His leadership and experience have been praised by Wizards coach Brian Keefe. Smart was acquired by the Wizards in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies in February, along with a 2025 first-round pick.

The future for Smart with the Wizards remains uncertain as he still has one year left on his contract. It is unknown whether he will stay with the rebuilding Wizards team or seek a new opportunity with a competitive team in the offseason. Despite not playing in the game against the Celtics, Smart’s return to TD Garden was a significant moment for both him and the Boston fans who still consider him a fan favorite.
