The Boston Bruins broke a 10-game losing streak with a win over Carolina, dropping them to the No. 5 spot in the pre-lottery position heading into the NHL Draft. They are tied with the Flyers for the fifth fewest points but are officially fifth due to more regulation wins. Seattle’s win over San Jose helped the Bruins’ positioning. The Bruins have five games left with the highest pre-lottery draft spot they can reach is third and the lowest being 13th.
Their outlook is at 31-37-9, the Bruins have 71 points and the most they can reach is 81 with five games left. Only the Sharks and Blackhawks can’t reach 71 points. The bottom seven teams in the NHL have the best chance of finishing with the No. 1 draft pick.
The NHL Draft Lottery rules state that all non-playoff teams are in the lottery and there will be two drawings for the No. 1 and No. 2 picks. Teams can only move up 10 selections if they win one of the lottery draws. Only the top 11 teams in the lottery are eligible to receive the No. 1 selection, with a team outside the top 11 winning the first draw resulting in the team with the worst record getting the No. 1 pick and the winner moving up 10 spots.
