After nearly four years of planning, a new documentary series titled The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox is set to be released on Netflix. Directed by four-time Emmy winner Greg Whiteley, the series chronicles the Red Sox’ 2024 season and was a collaboration between Major League Baseball and Netflix. The idea for the series first emerged in 2022 when MLB approached Netflix with the concept of providing a behind-the-scenes look at a team’s season.
Boston Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy was enthusiastic about the project, as were the players. The docuseries, made up of eight episodes, delves into both the on-field and off-field lives of the players. Themes emerged organically as the crew spent months filming various players, including Brayan Bello, Cam Booser, and Jarren Duran. Duran openly discusses his struggles with mental health and a past suicide attempt in one of the most compelling episodes.
The series also delves into baseball-centric topics such as the trade deadline and former radio broadcaster Joe Castiglione’s final month behind the microphone. Whiteley, the director, believes that the intense drive and passion of athletes make sports documentaries truly compelling. The docuseries will be released on Netflix on April 8, offering fans a unique and intimate look at the Boston Red Sox’ 2024 season.
