Young trans adults in Massachusetts are speaking out about the challenges they face in today’s political climate. Despite the state’s reputation for being a welcoming place for transgender individuals, these young adults are highlighting instances of transphobia, both in Massachusetts and across the country. President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting the trans community have further exacerbated their concerns.
In a panel discussion on GBH’s video series Politics IRL, these young trans adults expressed fears about hate speech online, hostility towards trans individuals, and concerns about safety in public spaces such as restrooms. They emphasized the need for more support and allies within the LGBTQ+ community, as well as from advocacy groups and local organizations.
While Massachusetts has provided a sense of community for these individuals, they are calling for increased awareness and action against transphobia. They feel that genuine support is lacking from both Democrats and Republicans, and are asking for assistance in combatting anti-trans rhetoric in everyday conversations.
As the 2024 general election approaches, Politics IRL aims to give young voters a platform to discuss the issues that matter to them. If you are a young voter interested in participating in the series, you can contact lead producer Alexi Cohan via email. The message from these young trans adults is clear: they need allies now more than ever in the fight against transphobia.
