Republican Mike Kennealy, who currently serves as Gov. Charlie Baker’s housing and economic development secretary, has officially announced his bid for governor in 2026. Kennealy is the first GOP candidate to challenge Democratic incumbent Gov. Maura Healey, who is seeking a second term. In a video released on Monday, Kennealy highlighted major issues plaguing the state, such as housing costs, transportation problems, and violence in emergency shelters.
Kennealy joins a potential Republican primary field that includes other candidates like Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis and former MBTA Administrator Brian Shortsleeve. He has already invested $2 million of his own money into the campaign. Kennealy positioned himself as a solution to the state’s current challenges, emphasizing his experience in turning around the Lawrence Public Schools.
A UMass Amherst poll revealed mixed opinions on Healey’s job performance, indicating a slight decline in approval ratings. Kennealy emphasized his strong leadership skills and experience in both public education and private equity. In response, Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairperson Steve Kerrigan criticized Kennealy, claiming his agenda aligns with that of former President Donald Trump.
Kennealy’s bid for governor sets the stage for a competitive election in 2026, as both parties gear up for a heated campaign season. The race is expected to focus on key issues affecting Massachusetts residents, such as economic conditions, healthcare, and leadership in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Voters will have the opportunity to choose between two distinct candidates and their respective visions for the state’s future.
