Local experts from the Marine Mammal Center have made the decision to euthanize a rare juvenile minke whale that was repeatedly stranded in the San Francisco Bay. The whale showed signs of severe sunburn, breathing difficulties, and unusual behavior, indicating deteriorating health. Despite attempts to hydrate and rescue the whale, its condition did not improve, leading to the difficult decision to euthanize it.
The minke whale’s case follows the recent discovery of three dead gray whales in the same area within a two-week period. The causes of death for the gray whales remain unclear, with one showing signs of being struck by a passing vessel. In response to these incidents, efforts are being made to reduce the threat of vessel strikes in the area. Ferry operators are cutting their engines and increasing communication to avoid collisions with whales, as the bay continues to see an increase in whale activity.
Experts at the Marine Mammal Center are urging all boaters to be mindful of whale presence in the area and to practice caution when navigating through shared waters. The bay serves as a critical space for both commercial vessels and migrating marine life, highlighting the importance of coexisting safely. The results of a necropsy on the minke whale are pending, while ongoing efforts are being made to protect and prevent further harm to marine mammals in the San Francisco Bay.
