The federal indictment alleges that Fernandes Anderson arranged to receive a $7,000 kickback from a staff member in City Hall, leading to her arrest in December. She also admitted to filing fraudulent federal income tax returns for three years. The indictment revealed details of how Fernandes Anderson ran her City Hall office, including requiring staff to sign nondisclosure agreements and hiring relatives.
Elected officials, including Mayor Michelle Wu and City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, called for Fernandes Anderson’s resignation prior to her announcement. Councilor Erin Murphy described the situation as eroding public trust and emphasized the need for a special election to ensure proper representation in District Seven. Councilor Ed Flynn echoed the sentiment, calling for the establishment of an ethics committee to address the loss of faith in the Boston City Council.
