Cambridge City Councilor Paul Toner has been identified as one of the alleged clients of a high-end brothel ring that was busted in November 2023 in Boston and Washington, D.C. Toner didn’t appear in court himself but released a statement apologizing for causing pain to his loved ones. Some councilors are calling for his resignation, while the Mayor urges respecting due process and maintaining innocence until proven guilty.
Federal investigators described the alleged clients of the brothel as individuals in positions of power and influence, with a total of 23 alleged buyers identified so far. The alleged ringleaders and organizers of the brothel network have pleaded guilty.
In a court battle that reached the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, media outlets fought for transparency in the legal proceedings, leading to the public naming of some of the alleged buyers. The court ruled in favor of public access to these hearings, citing concerns over potential bias and favoritism if held behind closed doors.
More hearings are scheduled, with another planned for March 28. The brothel is said to have operated as a club, offering clients a menu of women and services at luxury apartments in Cambridge and Watertown, Massachusetts, and eastern Virginia. The legal proceedings are expected to continue as the case against the alleged buyers progresses.
