UMass Chan Medical School has recently laid off or furloughed 200 employees due to a $30 million shortfall in NIH funding and federal funding uncertainty. The school, known for its cutting-edge research, has been negatively impacted by long delays in funding new grants since the Trump administration took over. As a result of this shortfall, the incoming Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences class was significantly reduced, faculty recruitment has been paused, and all hiring and discretionary spending has been frozen. UMass Chan has also rescinded provisional admission offers to dozens of PhD applicants.
UMass Chan Medical School Chancellor Michael Collins expressed concern about the impact of these cuts on research, particularly in areas such as gene therapy, rare disease research, digital medicine, and neuroscience. Governor Maura Healey visited the school to discuss the negative effects of the funding cuts on important medical research. These cuts not only affect the school’s ability to conduct groundbreaking clinical trials but also have economic implications, as UMass Chan is one of the largest employers in Central Massachusetts, creating over $2 billion in total annual economic impact.
