On April 16, Puerto Rico experienced an island-wide blackout affecting 1.4 million customers due to a transmission failure in the electrical system. This outage is the latest in a series of power outages that frequently occur in Puerto Rico, with the most recent one on New Year’s Eve taking days to resolve. Gov. Jenniffer González-Colón has labeled the transmission issue as unacceptable. Luma Energy, the private company in charge of power transmission and distribution, estimates that it could take between 48 and 72 hours to restore power to 90% of customers. As of the morning of April 17, crews have restored power to almost 16% of customers, with approximately 231,500 customers having their power back. The restoration efforts are ongoing, and the government is working to fully restore power as quickly as possible.
