West Springfield Town Common’s plantings receive recognition

The West Springfield Town Common has received Level I Accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program, recognizing the town for its arboreta and botanic gardens. To celebrate, a special event will be held on Earth Day at the Town Common. The Tree and Urban Forest Committee led by Tree Warden Marcus Catlett, worked to achieve this prestigious award in honor of the town’s 250th anniversary. The town has made efforts to diversify its tree canopy, which is predominantly made up of maple trees. Various types of trees have been added to the Town Common, including dawn redwood, slippery elm, tamarack, and more.

The Tree and Urban Forest Committee was established in 2015 to manage the town’s trees, and Mayor William C. Reichelt has continued this initiative. The committee is looking for new members to help with tree maintenance, publicity, education, events, and grant applications. Those interested can contact Pat Garbacik to get involved. This recognition highlights the town’s dedication to maintaining and expanding its urban forest for the benefit of all residents.
