A Braintree couple, Xue Tan Zheng, 50, and Xiu Rong Li, 55, are facing 15 criminal charges after being indicted for allegedly running illegal casinos in Chinatown and Quincy. The charges include money laundering, tax evasion, trafficking unstamped cigarettes, and possessing or operating illegal gaming devices. The investigation found that the couple operated unlicensed casinos and sold unstamped tobacco products without charging the required tax. Investigators seized a large quantity of unstamped cigarettes, slot machines, and cash during a search of the couple’s residences and businesses. The couple also allegedly underreported their taxable income for the years 2022 and 2023. Assistant Attorney General Keri Angus is prosecuting the case. The indictments are the result of a two-year joint investigation by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit. The couple could face severe penalties if found guilty of the charges.
