El Salvador suggests exchanging US-deported Venezuelans for Venezuelan ‘political prisoners’

Sen. Chris Van Hollen recently visited El Salvador and met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported by the Trump administration. Upon his return, Van Hollen expressed support for El Salvador President Nayib Bukele’s proposal to exchange 252 Venezuelan prisoners held in El Salvador for political prisoners held in Venezuela. Bukele suggested including journalists, human rights lawyers, and family members of opposition leaders among those to be released.

The proposal comes after the Trump administration deported at least 200 Venezuelans to El Salvador, accusing them of being part of a criminal gang, despite denials from the Venezuelan government and assertions that the migrants have no ties to criminal groups. The U.S. has been paying El Salvador to detain these migrants in a high-security facility.

In response, the Venezuelan government has denied holding political prisoners and insists that those imprisoned have been convicted of crimes. However, human rights organizations claim that over 800 people are detained for political reasons in Venezuela. The U.S. Supreme Court recently intervened to temporarily block the deportation of another group of Venezuelan migrants accused of gang ties, prompting the Trump administration to defend their immigration crackdown but comply with the court’s decision.

Overall, the situation highlights the complexities of immigration policies, the humanitarian concerns of individuals detained in different countries, and the tensions surrounding political prisoners and human rights abuses in Venezuela.
