Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts has spoken out against President Donald Trump’s attacks on higher education, law firms, and other institutions, calling it a constitutional crisis. McGovern criticized Trump for ignoring the Constitution, denying due process, and behaving like a king rather than a president. He urged Republicans in Congress to stand up to the White House to protect checks and balances in the country.
McGovern expressed horror at the administration’s treatment of illegal immigrants, including a case involving a Tufts University graduate student. He also highlighted instances where ICE detained a U.S. citizen and revoked visas for legally present students without explanation, likening the actions to those of authoritarian regimes in countries like Russia or China.
McGovern commended Harvard University for refusing to comply with the Trump administration’s demands, risking $9 billion in federal funding. He emphasized the importance of academic freedom and urged all colleges and universities to stand together against unjust encroachments on freedom of education. McGovern called for a united front to push back against the administration’s actions and protect the rights of citizens and students in the country.
