California man sentenced for trafficking baby spider monkeys

A Texas man, Sarmad Ghaled Dafar, was recently sentenced to four months in federal prison and ordered to pay over $23,000 in restitution for trafficking six endangered spider monkeys. The crime was discovered when a co-conspirator attempted to smuggle three monkeys into the U.S. The monkeys were intended for Dafar’s illicit operation, as proven through Facebook messages used as evidence in the case. Dafar had previously been involved in smuggling Mexican spider monkeys into the country multiple times. The rescued monkeys were quarantined and ultimately found a safe home at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois.

Wildlife experts have highlighted the severe impact of poaching on endangered species like the Mexican spider monkey. Mothers and their babies are typically part of troops, with mothers unwilling to part with their offspring. Poachers often kill or harm the mothers and their groups to capture the infants for illegal trade. Mexican spider monkeys are targeted due to their small size and exotic appeal as pets. The confiscated monkeys were found to be only weeks old and needed their mothers for nourishment and protection. This crime not only poses public health risks but also disrupts fragile ecosystems and endangers vulnerable species. The incident shed light on the ongoing issue of wildlife trafficking at U.S. ports of entry, prompting authorities and wildlife organizations to take action to protect these vulnerable animals.
