After a recent mass shooting on Florida State University’s campus, students and staff returned for their first day of classes just four days later. The campus was somber and emotional, with memorials set up around campus and fewer students present than usual. Many students, like sophomore Bobby Bowden, felt a sense of normalcy in returning to class and getting back into a routine. However, the administration faced criticism for resuming classes so soon after the tragedy. Options were provided for students to finish the semester remotely, take finals virtually, or request an incomplete grade to return later. Freshman Courtney Lesser, who was on lockdown during the shooting, decided to return to campus to face the tragic reality and be with friends. President Richard McCullough visited campus and spoke with students about their feelings, noting their resilience in the face of tragedy. Animal therapy was also provided on campus for students to find comfort and support during this difficult time. Despite the fear and sadness lingering on campus, students like Christina Elms are determined not to let a sense of safety be taken away from them, and are working towards desensitizing themselves to the trauma. The community is coming together to support one another and find ways to heal in the wake of this tragedy.
