Mom, My Wedding is Not All About You

Parents of Bride Upset by Daughter’s Rejection of Wedding Traditions

A mother writes to Dear Abby, expressing her dismay over her daughter’s refusal to follow traditional wedding customs. The daughter, Alexa, is engaged to a man she’s been with for five years but has rejected many common wedding practices. She won’t wear an engagement ring, have an engagement party or bridal shower, register for gifts, have a bridal party, wear a bridal gown, or have a reception with dancing or toasts.

The parents are willing to pay for the wedding but feel they are being ignored by the couple who are doctors and can afford what they want. The father is considering not walking Alexa down the aisle, and the mother is hesitant to attend the wedding at all. Dear Abby advises the parents to remember it’s Alexa’s wedding, not theirs, and suggests they spend the money they would have spent on a luxurious vacation instead.

In another letter, a family in Oregon is concerned after relatives moved in with a handgun and ammunition without their knowledge. Dear Abby acknowledges the importance of gun safety but emphasizes that bringing a gun into someone else’s home without permission is not acceptable. She advises the family to check Oregon’s gun laws and consider storing the weapon elsewhere.
