DHS Highlights Increase in Deportations, Referencing ‘Internal Data’

Experts are questioning the Trump administration’s claim that it has deported 139,000 immigrants in its first 100 days, as significant discrepancies exist in reported figures. Tom Homan, the administration’s acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), asserted the numbers during a White House briefing, citing the goal of deporting 1 million people annually. However, ICE’s own reports indicate fewer than 57,000 deportations, raising doubts about the accuracy of the administration’s numbers.

Analysts suggest that the administration’s claim could only be valid if there were substantial deportations at the U.S.-Canada border, which appears unlikely. The decrease in illegal crossings at the southern border, due to tightened enforcement policies, has led to a noticeable decline in apprehensions. Austin Kocher from Syracuse University notes that achieving the reported deportation figures would require a drastic change in enforcement methods or how deportations are counted.

Moreover, immigration data indicate an increase in arrests and detentions, yet the reported deportations remain inflated. Tom Cartwright, who monitors ICE flights, estimated only 50,000 deportations could have occurred via observed flights, far below the administration’s claims. Calls for transparency in immigration statistics have intensified, with experts from both ends of the political spectrum agreeing on the need for accountability.

The administration’s response to inquiries about what constitutes the deportation numbers has been vague, with claims that data includes removals from various agencies. Critics argue that more clarity is essential to accurately assess the enforcement impact of Trump’s policies. Despite rising interior enforcement efforts, the administration’s reliance on questionable deportation figures may hinder public trust in its immigration strategy.
