Legendary Rock Band’s Drummer to Skip More Shows Due to Health Concerns

Frank Beard, ZZ Top’s Drummer, to Miss Australian and New Zealand Tour Dates Due to Health Issues

ZZ Top’s iconic drummer, Frank Beard, will be absent from the Australian and New Zealand legs of "The Evolution Tour" due to ongoing health concerns. According to a statement from Live Nation on April 24, Beard is focusing on an extended physical therapy regimen, which has proven beneficial in addressing health issues that previously sidelined him during the recent U.S. tour.

The 75-year-old musician has been a pivotal part of ZZ Top for over 55 years, taking up the role in 1969 after co-founder Dan Mitchell. Beard first stepped back from touring in March, prioritizing his health when he announced the need for a temporary hiatus to address serious health issues.

In his absence, percussionist and drummer John Douglas, a longtime associate of the band, will fill in. Douglas has a history with ZZ Top, having previously filled the role during a 2002 tour in France. The decision ensures the band’s performance continuity while allowing Beard to focus entirely on his recovery.

ZZ Top is scheduled to perform seven shows across Australia and New Zealand before heading for the North American leg of the tour in June. The band will also take center stage at The Big E Arena in West Springfield, Massachusetts, on September 28 for a highly anticipated show featuring a mix of classic hits and fan favorites.

While fans express their disappointment over Beard’s absence, the focus remains on his total recovery as ZZ Top prepares to deliver electrifying performances in the months ahead. Tickets for the upcoming events are available exclusively through The Big E’s website.
