Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson to Resign After Guilty Plea on Corruption Charges
Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson has announced her decision to plead guilty to federal corruption charges and will resign from her position on the City Council. In a statement, she expressed remorse, stating, “I would like to apologize to my constituents, supporters, and all who have been impacted. Please forgive me.”
The U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts charged Fernandes Anderson with wire fraud and theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. Prosecutors revealed she took a $7,000 kickback in connection with hiring a relative who allegedly received a significant bonus. Facing trial could have resulted in decades of imprisonment, but as part of a plea deal, she is expected to receive a recommended sentence of one year and one day, along with three years of supervised release and $13,000 in restitution.
Fernandes Anderson cited personal financial struggles as a factor in her actions, and admitted to filing fraudulent income taxes for three consecutive years.
Initially, despite calls for her resignation from Mayor Michelle Wu and other council members, Fernandes Anderson had stated her intent to remain in office. However, following her guilty plea, City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune affirmed the necessity for elected officials to uphold integrity.
The Boston City Council will convene to discuss the possibility of a special election to fill the District 7 seat, which includes neighborhoods such as Roxbury and Dorchester. City Councilor Erin Murphy stated the urgency in moving forward, emphasizing the need to restore credibility within the council.
Fernandes Anderson was first elected in November 2021 and re-elected last November. Her resignation marks a significant moment in local governance as the city grapples with the repercussions of the ongoing legal and ethical issues among its council members.
