Navy $60M Fighter Jet Lost in Red Sea After Falling from Carrier

The Houthis, Yemen’s rebel group, claimed a U.S. airstrike on a prison housing African migrants killed at least 68 individuals and injured 47. This incident is one of the deadliest attacks against the Houthis during an ongoing campaign. The airstrike reportedly occurred amidst increased U.S. military interventions targeting the Houthis, including strikes on a Red Sea fuel terminal that resulted in at least 74 fatalities.

In another related development, the U.S. Navy reported that an F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet fell off the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier while being towed on April 28. The Navy stated that during the towing process, the crew lost control, leading to the aircraft and tow tractor plunging into the Red Sea. Fortunately, all personnel were accounted for, with one sailor sustaining a minor injury. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident.

According to reports from U.S. officials, the aircraft carrier had to make a sharp maneuver to evade Houthi fire, although it remains unclear if that caused the fighter jet to fall. The Houthi-controlled media claimed they targeted the USS Truman in response to alleged U.S. actions against civilians.

President Trump has vowed to hold the Houthis accountable, intensifying military operations and asserting ongoing attacks until the group ceases its assaults on shipping in the region. U.S. Central Command reported over 800 strikes on Houthi targets since March 15, contributing to significant casualties among Houthi fighters and leaders. Meanwhile, the Truman’s deployment has been extended, and additional military resources have been sent to reinforce U.S. efforts in the Middle East.
