Trump Targets Sanctuary Cities with Executive Order
On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Attorney General to compile a list of "sanctuary cities," potentially including Boston. This list will highlight jurisdictions that allegedly obstruct federal immigration enforcement and could face funding cuts or other penalties. The order, issued during a closed signing event at the White House, claims sanctuary policies undermine federal law and endanger public safety.
Trump’s administration will identify these jurisdictions within 30 days, alerting them to their non-compliance with federal law. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that adhering to federal immigration laws is straightforward and that the administration aims to remove public safety threats.
While sanctuary cities lack a strict definition, they typically refer to places where local law enforcement limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Massachusetts, home to several cities like Amherst and Chelsea, may face scrutiny under this order, especially following a state Supreme Judicial Court ruling limiting cooperation with federal detainers.
Trump has pursued similar actions before, but his earlier attempts faced legal setbacks. A federal judge recently blocked new orders targeting sanctuary jurisdictions, citing constitutional concerns and vague definitions.
