Mayor Michelle Wu Leads in Mayoral Race, Faces Local Challenges
BOSTON — A recent Saint Anselm College poll indicates that Mayor Michelle Wu holds a strong lead in the mayoral race against challenger Josh Kraft, with 53% of likely voters supporting her reelection. Kraft trails significantly at 21%, alongside community activist Domingos DaRosa and City Hall employee Kerry Augustin, who also aim for the November election.
Despite her lead, Wu faces potential vulnerabilities due to public disapproval on key local issues. The poll revealed that 67% disapprove of the city’s handling of housing costs, while 66% and 57% disapprove of traffic and homelessness management, respectively. However, 70% of respondents expressed satisfaction with Boston’s overall quality of life, which may complicate challenges for Wu.
Kraft’s campaign remains undeterred by early polling, focusing on engaging with voters about pressing local issues. He has garnered support among Republicans and those dissatisfied with Boston’s sanctuary city status and quality of life. Wu, conversely, retains strong backing from Democrats and voters prioritizing affordable housing and economic issues.
Poll executive Neil Levesque notes that while Kraft has a defined voter base, expanding his appeal is crucial amid an election atmosphere heavily influenced by national politics.
