Connor Wong Rejoins Red Sox Roster; Backup Catcher Option Sent to AAA

Red Sox Welcome Back Connor Wong After Quick Recovery from Injury

BOSTON — In a swift return to form, Connor Wong has been activated from the injured list by the Boston Red Sox, just weeks after fracturing his pinky finger. The catcher will take to the field tonight, batting seventh and catching pitcher Brayan Bello in their series opener against the Minnesota Twins.

Wong, who previously started the season as the primary catcher, struggled before his injury, managing only a .087 batting average with seven strikeouts over nine games. His injury occurred on April 7 during a play involving George Springer, when Wong was struck on his hand during a catcher’s interference.

After a brisk recovery, Wong completed a brief rehab stint at Triple-A Worcester, where he showed promise by going 4-for-11 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs in three games.

His return presents a new dynamic for the Red Sox as backup catcher Carlos Narváez has emerged as a key player, showcasing strong defensive skills along with an ability to contribute offensively. This development is likely to lead to a timeshare arrangement, with Wong and Narváez sharing the catching duties moving forward.

In a corresponding move, the Red Sox optioned backup catcher Blake Sabol to Triple-A. Sabol, who came to Boston from a minor trade with San Francisco, played in eight games, hitting just .125 with two hits in 16 at-bats. Additionally, he struggled defensively against base stealers, with runners converting 10 out of 11 attempts. Sabol will join veteran catcher Yasmani Grandal in Worcester, who opted to remain with the organization despite having the option to leave.

As Wong reclaims his position, the Red Sox look to capitalize on the strengths of their catching duo in the weeks ahead.
