Defense Attorneys Seek Dismissal of Terrorism Charges Against Luigi Mangione
Attorneys for accused killer Luigi Mangione are seeking to dismiss terrorism charges in his New York case and suppress evidence obtained during a warrantless search. In a filing with the New York Supreme Court, Mangione’s lawyers argued that the charges mischaracterize his actions and that a search of his backpack, which yielded a handwritten note and a loaded handgun magazine, was unlawful.
Mangione, a 2016 high school valedictorian, pleaded not guilty last week to federal murder charges that could carry the death penalty. He is implicated in the December shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel.
Prosecutors allege that Mangione’s writings demonstrate an intent to intimidate the public. However, his defense argues that his intention was not to instill fear and challenges the characterization of his writings as a manifesto, emphasizing that they were never meant for public release. They contend it is law enforcement’s actions that have caused public fear and intimidation, not Mangione’s.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has not commented on the case.
