Wayland Warriors Revitalized: Aiming for State Title
The Wayland boys volleyball team is shifting gears this season, focusing not just on skill training but on building a strong team culture. Following a week off for April vacation, head coach Phil George led a 30-minute discussion on the book “The Culture Code,” emphasizing the importance of team dynamics. With a strong roster returning from last year’s state runner-up finish, the Warriors aim to capture their first state title, despite an inconsistent 6-5 start against a demanding schedule.
Captain Finn Bell, a standout player averaging over 20 kills per match, noted that the team’s rollercoaster performance stems from both strong and disappointing losses. They’ve achieved notable wins against top rivals like Lexington and Newton North, but fell short against teams like St. John’s Prep.
George’s approach involves developing players through challenging matchups, with the hope that experiencing high-pressure situations will bolster their playoff performance. "Winning a state title is the goal, but building successful players is just as crucial," he said. As the Warriors aim to improve and push through the playoffs, they believe their resilience will pave the way for success.
Taunton Tigers Celebrate League Title
In a strong resurgence, the Taunton Tigers recently swept Milford, marking their first victory over the Scarlet Hawks since 2018. This win, part of their new Hockomock League schedule, helped Taunton secure at least a share of the league title. Head coach Toby Chaperon emphasized the significance of this win, showing the team can compete with strong programs. After a tough previous season, Taunton’s impressive 10-1 record this year positions them as contenders heading into the state tournament.
