Greater Boston Community Votes Down Immigrant Protection Proposal

Massachusetts Towns Navigate Immigration Policies Amid Trump Administration Pressure

MANSFIELD, MA – Amid escalating federal immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, the town of Mansfield—roughly 30 miles southwest of Boston—has voted against a citizens’ petition aimed at limiting local resources for enforcing federal immigration laws. The petition, proposed by resident Marcia Szymanski, sought to affirm the town’s commitment to immigrant safety but was overwhelmingly rejected during a recent town meeting attended by over 480 residents.

Szymanski argued that the petition would not establish a sanctuary town or provoke federal backlash but instead reaffirm "freedom, justice, and equality for all." However, Police Chief Ron Sellon indicated that local resources are already not allocated for federal enforcement due to the 2017 Lunn decision, which restricts detaining aliens based solely on federal immigration requests.

Sellon labeled the rejected petition as “moot” and expressed concerns over the potential risk to federal funding, essential for the town’s financially-strapped police department, which relies on about $500,000 in federal grants. Mansfield residents recently also voted against a proposed $2.7 million tax increase for the upcoming fiscal year.

This local decision comes amid a nationwide discourse on sanctuary cities. In Massachusetts, while some municipalities have adopted protective measures for immigrants, others like Concord and Natick emphasize their non-sanctuary status, clarifying their policies focus on inclusivity rather than defiance of federal law.

Governor Maura Healey has maintained that Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state, asserting safety and cooperation among law enforcement. As the Trump administration continues its crackdown, local communities remain divided on how best to navigate these complex immigration issues while preserving public safety and community integrity.
