Trump Questions Constitutional Due Process in Deportation Efforts
In a recent NBC’s Meet the Press interview, President Donald Trump raised eyebrows when he expressed uncertainty about upholding the Constitution regarding due process in deportation cases. When asked whether he agreed that every individual, irrespective of citizenship status, deserves legal process before being deported, Trump replied, “I don’t know,” adding that he is “not a lawyer.”
These comments follow a federal ruling by U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr., who halted the administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans associated with the violent Tren de Aragua gang. The judge noted that Trump’s proclamation lacked evidence of an imminent threat and exceeded the lawful scope of the Act.
Trump lamented that judicial constraints might impede the deportation of criminals, while reaffirming his commitment to prioritize public safety during his term. The president also addressed speculation about a possible third term, asserting this would be his last, while hinting at Vice President JD Vance as a strong successor.
On foreign policy, Trump controversially suggested that Canada should become the 51st state but was noncommittal on future actions regarding Greenland.
