Press Article: Rain and Flood Watch in Massachusetts This Week
Massachusetts residents are bracing for continued rain this week, following a wet weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch effective from 8 p.m. Monday to Tuesday night, highlighting a heightened risk of excessive rainfall and potential flash flooding across various regions.
As conditions remain dreary and misty on Monday night, rainfall is expected to move eastward from western New England, particularly affecting areas with higher elevations like the Berkshires and Worcester Hills. Forecasts indicate precipitation totals between one and one-and-a-half inches, with Eastern Massachusetts and much of Rhode Island receiving about half an inch or less.
The flood watch covers a significant portion of the state, including Franklin, Worcester, Hampshire, and Hampden counties. Authorities warn that ongoing rain, combined with previous downpours, could lead to over two-and-a-half inches of water accumulation. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should remain vigilant, as excessive runoff may cause rivers and streams to overflow, and clogged storm drains may worsen conditions.
On Tuesday, Boston’s rain probability increases from 55% to 70%, with other cities such as Lowell and Worcester anticipating a 100% chance by the morning. Springfield’s rain odds peak at 85% before gradually declining throughout the day.
Temperatures are expected to remain in the 50s overnight, with warming anticipated into the low to mid-60s on Tuesday. Although heavier rain should move offshore by mid-morning, Central and Eastern Massachusetts may see additional precipitation totaling three-quarters of an inch to one inch by the day’s end. By Tuesday night, conditions will likely improve, with less cloud cover and a return to patchy skies. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and be prepared for potential flooding.
