Celtics Suffer Shock Loss to Knicks in Game 1 of Playoff Series
By Chad Finn, The Boston Globe – May 6, 2025
The Boston Celtics faced a surprising setback in Game 1 of their playoff series against the New York Knicks, losing 108-105 in overtime after leading by as much as 20 points. This defeat marked a new low for the Celtics, who set an NBA playoff record by attempting 60 three-pointers but making only 15.
The Celtics, presumed favorites, appeared poised for an easy win as they dominated the first half, leading 61-45 at halftime. Star player Jayson Tatum initially performed well, scoring 23 points, but struggled with poor decision-making as the game progressed, finishing with only 4 of 15 from beyond the arc. Jaylen Brown added to the misery, going just 1 for 10 from three-point range.
As the game unfolded, the Knicks rallied, fueled by Jalen Brunson, who scored 29 points and hit all three of his three-point attempts in the fourth quarter. The Celtics’ offense stagnated, taking a series of ill-advised long-range shots instead of attacking the paint against a Knicks team burdened with foul trouble.
Key injuries also plagued the Celtics, with Kristaps Porzingis affected by illness and Sam Hauser nursing an ankle injury, raising concerns about the team’s depth moving forward in the series.
With the series now 1-0 in favor of the Knicks, Game 2 becomes a must-win for the Celtics, who will need to reevaluate their strategy, especially in regard to their three-point shooting. The Knicks, meanwhile, have gained not just a game but also newfound confidence, setting the stage for an intense rivalry showdown ahead.
