Residents of a posh cul-de-sac in West Lake Hills, Texas, are voicing their frustration over ongoing disturbances linked to their new neighbor: tech billionaire Elon Musk. After Musk purchased a $6 million mansion, construction workers erected a 16-foot chain-link fence and installed security cameras, prompting complaints about traffic, noise, and heightened security measures in the otherwise tranquil neighborhood.
Local homeowners expressed their discontent at a recent Zoning and Planning Commission meeting, highlighting violations of six city ordinances due to Musk’s unpermitted constructions. Notably, the fence exceeded city height limits and a gate lacked necessary permits. “Transporting service employees, leaving cars on our streets, and hauling laundry has to stop,” wrote neighbor Paul Hemmer, who spearheaded the complaints, alongside other residents.
While Musk has successfully maneuvered regulatory frameworks in his business ventures, he faces significant pushback from municipal authorities. The commission unanimously rejected Musk’s request for variances to keep the unpermitted structures. “If we allow exceptions, we’d be incentivizing rule-breaking,” stated commissioner Jim Pledger.
