Elon Musk’s attempts to keep his disputes with neighbors private have been thwarted in West Lake Hills, Texas, where the billionaire sought to maintain confidentiality regarding his $6 million mansion and security measures. Emails obtained by The New York Times reveal that Musk’s team lobbied city officials in March to keep a public meeting about potential community grievances under wraps.
Musk’s representatives argued that, due to his status as a “federal public official,” he should be exempt from public records laws, claiming they could provide necessary clearance documentation. The dispute centers on a recently constructed 16-foot chain-link fence and a metal gate equipped with a camera, erected without proper permits and violating multiple city ordinances.
Despite their efforts for privacy, the West Lake Hills city attorney denied Musk’s request for a closed meeting. In a public gathering held last month by the Zoning and Planning Commission, Musk’s appeal to retain the fence and gate was rejected, with the matter set to be taken up by the City Council. This meeting had originally been scheduled for May 14 but postponed to June 11 at Musk’s request.
The 6,900-square-foot home, purchased in 2022 through a limited liability company, serves as Musk’s base when in Austin and has recently become a focal point for his security operations. Neighboring residents raised concerns about the fence and increased traffic in their community, prompting the investigation.
As city officials navigate the complexities of Musk’s high-profile neighborhood disputes, questions remain regarding privacy rights and local governance, particularly when involved parties have significant public stature. Musk’s team has yet to respond to requests for comment on the ongoing situation.
