Community Demands Safety Reforms After Tragic Loss of 5-Year-Old Boy in Hyde Park
Hyde Park, Boston – Following the tragic death of 5-year-old Lens Arthur Joseph, who was struck by a school bus on April 28, neighborhood advocates are calling for urgent safety measures to prevent further tragedies. Joseph’s death near 107 Washington St. has shocked the community, prompting the West Fairmount Hill Community Group to organize a gathering focused on street safety. "We cannot allow this tragedy to ever happen again," the group stated, emphasizing the need for traffic-calming measures such as speed humps and the addition of monitors on school buses.
The community meeting is set for 6 p.m. on May 13 at Moynihan Park, with a backup location at the Boston Police Academy if weather conditions are poor. Local city councilors are echoing these calls for reform. At-large Councilor Henry Santana plans to propose a full review of transportation safety protocols, while District 5 Councilor Enrique Pepén is advocating for accelerated installation of speed humps.
Joseph was remembered fondly by family members for his dreams of becoming a pilot or a police officer, highlighting a vibrant personality and boundless curiosity. The community aims to ensure that no child experiences a similar fate.
