Key Republican Opposes Trump’s Nominee for Top DC Prosecutor Due to January 6th Concerns

Senator Tillis Opposes Trump’s Pick for D.C. Prosecutor, Stalling Nomination

Washington, D.C. — Republican Senator Thom Tillis has announced his opposition to Ed Martin, President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., effectively halting the nomination just weeks before Martin’s temporary appointment expires. Tillis cited Martin’s defense of the Capitol rioters from January 6, 2021, as the primary reason for his stance.

Following a meeting with Martin, Tillis stated, “What happened on January 6th was wrong. They made a stupid decision… and they disgraced the United States.” Martin, who had been closely aligned with Trump’s efforts to contest the 2020 election results, could still be confirmed after his appointment expires on May 20, but Tillis’s opposition signals a lack of support within the Senate.

Since his January appointment, Martin has faced criticism for his management of the U.S. Attorney’s office, including the dismissal of veteran attorneys involved in prosecuting Capitol rioters. More than 100 former federal prosecutors have expressed concern over Martin’s qualifications and approach, labeling him an “affront” to justice.

Despite pushback, Martin’s supporters, including Republican state attorneys general, advocate for his confirmation. The White House remains optimistic, affirming Martin’s commitment to law and order in D.C.
