Press Release: U.S. Sanctions Target Myanmar’s Karen National Army Amid Human Trafficking Allegations
BANGKOK (AP) — The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Myanmar’s Karen National Army (KNA) and its leader, Col. Saw Chit Thu, citing their alleged involvement in human trafficking and cyber scams. The Treasury accused the KNA of facilitating cyber scams that exploit victims, particularly Americans, while generating significant profits for criminal organizations.
“This kind of criminal operation robs individuals of their savings and security,” stated Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender. The sanctions block the KNA and its associates from accessing financial resources within U.S. jurisdiction.
In response, KNA spokesperson Lt. Col. Naing Maung Zaw rejected the accusations, claiming the group is focused on regional development rather than illicit activities. He characterized U.S. actions as a reflection of power dynamics, asserting that the KNA does not control all scam operations in the area.
Despite claims of infrastructure development, localities like Shwe Kokko and Myawaddy remain notorious for criminal syndicates linked to online scams. Zaw revealed that over 7,000 foreign scam workers have been repatriated amid ongoing crackdowns, while efforts to identify remaining individuals continue. The KNA operates in a context of heightened conflict, following the military coup in February 2021.
