OpenAI Appoints Fidji Simo as Chief Executive of Applications

OpenAI announced late Wednesday the appointment of Fidji Simo, the former CEO of Instacart, as its new Chief Executive of Applications, tasked with leading the company’s business and operations teams. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, will continue to oversee the organization while Simo’s role allows him to concentrate on pivotal areas such as research, computing, and safety systems.

In a blog post, Altman emphasized OpenAI’s rapid transformation into a global product and infrastructure company delivering AI tools on a vast scale. He noted that the complexities of managing these significant ventures called for exceptional leadership, marking Simo’s arrival as timely and crucial.

Simo, also a board member at OpenAI, will handle sales, marketing, and finance. Her recruitment comes as OpenAI’s innovative products, including the much-lauded ChatGPT, continue to capture global interest and user growth. The San Francisco-based firm recently completed a monumental $40 billion funding round led by SoftBank, valuing OpenAI at an impressive $300 billion.

However, the company’s evolution from a nonprofit to a profit-driven model has raised eyebrows, especially among critics like Elon Musk who question the prioritization of profits over AI safety. Scrutiny from state attorneys general has also followed the organization’s restructuring efforts. Following some contention, OpenAI committed to allowing its nonprofit arm to retain influence over operations.

In her statement, Simo expressed enthusiasm for the potential of AI to advance human capabilities and her dedication to steering applications for public good. While transitioning to her new role, she will remain at Instacart temporarily to help find her successor. The appointment reflects OpenAI’s ambitious trajectory in the evolving AI landscape.
