3 Critical Questions for Boston Fleet Following a Disappointing Season Finale

Boston Fleet Ends Regular Season with Disappointment, Eyes Offseason

In a heartbreaking end to their PWHL season, the Boston Fleet fell short of a playoff berth after suffering an 8-1 defeat against the Minnesota Frost in their regular-season finale. This loss, combined with the Ottawa Charge’s win over the Toronto Sceptres, left the Fleet tied for third place but unable to secure a playoff spot due to a lower number of regulation wins.

General Manager Danielle Marmer expressed her discontent, stating, “We were hoping we’d be preparing for a game… instead, we’re left here to reflect on this year.” Head Coach Courtney Kessel also lamented the missed opportunity, emphasizing the Fleet’s potential for a deep playoff run with star players like Hilary Knight and Aerin Frankel leading the charge.

Looking ahead, the Fleet face critical offseason challenges, particularly with an expansion draft looming as the league adds two new teams, Seattle and Vancouver. Marmer noted the need to bolster the roster, especially on defense and depth scoring.

Further complicating matters, the organization is evaluating its home base. While the Fleet have been satisfied with their support in Lowell, attendance sees potential growth in a more centrally located venue closer to Boston. Recent sell-out games at Boston University’s Agganis Arena hinted at this possibility.

Beyond immediate roster concerns, Marmer highlighted the need to develop new franchise fixtures as some veterans, including Knight, age. Players like Alina Müller and rookie Hannah Bilka are being positioned to step up in the coming seasons.

Despite the disappointing finish, the Fleet are determined to regroup and strengthen their roster, maintaining hope for a more prosperous 2025-26 season.
